More than just a place to clean your teeth and shower at the end of each day, the bathroom has become a sanctuary for the body, mind and and soul.

This, not so humble room, is the third most renovated room in the house, following the kitchen and family/living rooms, and the second in terms of cost. Bathrooms measuring more than 5 square metres cost on average $13,300 to renovate, while their smaller equivalents set their owners back an average of $10,300.

So why has this room, whose primary function is to clean yourself, become so important?

It’s a good place to decompress. If you’ve had a bad day, or just want to disconnect from the world for a little while, there may be no better way than taking a long bath or hot shower.

It offers solitude and serves as a great hiding spot. If you want to take a break from anyone or anything, this is the place to go. The majority of people know better than to bother someone using the bathroom. You’re safe – as long as the door is locked!

Divinely indulgent – 11 Firelight Ave, Killara

It’s the room that starts and finishes each day. You wake up, use the toilet, wash your hands, take a shower, brush your teeth, style your hair, and are out the door. Before going to bed, you use the toilet, wash your hands, brush your teeth, remove makeup, wash your face, apply any creams or moisturizers, and are then ready for bed. The average person will spend about 1.5 years of his or her lifetime in the bathroom.

The judgment zone. Anyone entering your home is probably going to use your bathroom at some point. Even if its’ not super stylish, it should be immaculately clean. Clean toilet, bath and shower are the obvious, but having a clean hand towel, liquid soap, air freshner, and maybe even a candle will create a space that guests will want to use.
